Companies have developed a new and improved version of cellular technology called 5G, that’s believed to transfer data up to 20 times faster than 4G coverage.
While this might sound like a great thing for all of us, it may very well come with a new set of dangers to our health.
We are exposed to electromagnetic radiation on a daily basis from devices such as our phones, computers, microwaves, TVs, and more.
The difference between these devices and 5G radiation is that we don’t fully know the risks of 5G, and it operates on different frequencies to the other devices.
5G Radiation Protection
Keeping distance from 5G sources provides the best protection from 5G radiation. Measuring EMF levels to identify hotspots, EMF shielding, a healthy diet, and earthing are additional ways to enhance 5G radiation protection.
I have listed and explained a few tips that can certainly protect you, in the best possible way, from the dangers of 5G radiation:
1. Keep distance from 5G sources
Read my guide on locating 5G towers in your area.
There are probably very few people left in the world who don’t own a mobile device, and it’s very common for people to spend long periods of time on their phones throughout the day.
At the very least, many people will carry their phones will them all day, either in their pocket or bra. While this seems like the most convenient thing to do, it massively increases your exposure to radiation.
When it comes to 5G radiation, the best thing to do is to keep your distance as much as possible. This might not seem like the easiest thing to do when you need to use your phone to contact people, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be in your possession all day, every day.
There are various ways you can limit your exposure to 5G radiation from your mobile device, including:
- Rather than carrying it in your pocket, keep it in a separate bag so there’s at least some distance from your body
- Don’t keep your phone by you at night. If possible, leave it in another room to charge so you’re not exposed to radiation while you sleep
- Limit the amount of time it stays in contact with your body, especially while on a call. Wherever possible, use a loudspeaker or a hand’s free kit
- Turn it off when not in use. The best time to do this is overnight, or when you’re in work as these are times you won’t be using it anyway
This same logic applies to other devices, such as computers and routers, that will likely be updated to run on the new 5G frequencies.
Move routers out of communal rooms if possible, as this will limit your exposure to harmful radiation while at home. If you plan on using a computer for an extended period of time, particularly laptops, sit as far away as you can and buy a separate keyboard and mouse.
While increasing the distance between yourself and electronic devices won’t completely remove your exposure to 5G radiation, it will help to lower the risks associated with prolonged use.
It might take some time to adjust to this kind of routine, so start now before 5G devices have been properly rolled out worldwide.
2. Measure EMF levels whenever possible
This option might seem a bit drastic, but it entirely depends on your desire to minimize your exposure to 5G radiation. 5G is classed as an electromagnetic field (EMF), and these can easily be detected with the right device.
Presently, there is no EMF meter that detects 5G because till now there has been no requirement.
The Trifield TF2 is one of the most versatile EMF meters available. And for the capability it offers, when I checked the listing of this EMF meter on Amazon, I was really surprised to see how well it is priced. However, it does not detect 5G.
Once you have an EMF detector, the next step is to start detecting!
Use the device to identify areas of high radiation (if you’re concerned specifically about 5G radiation then it shouldn’t be too difficult to find the location of reception towers). These devices won’t single out one certain kind of radiation, but will only identify sources of high radiation levels.
Identifying the location and severity of 5G radiation levels on any regular journeys you take will help you to modify your route to avoid these sources.
While the amount of 5G reception towers is currently very small, it won’t take long before there are many of them in your city.
Hunting them down and changing your routes will minimize your exposure to these sources, which will ultimately be a benefit.
3. Buy an EMF shield
There’s quite a big range of products you can buy to minimize or neutralize 5G radiation emitted by your phone. For EMF protection from cell phones, check out my list of 5 best cases which I have created on the basis of testing, lab test reports, and user reviews.
While these won’t completely remove the risk of 5G radiation, many claim to reduce its impact by up to 92%. Be careful when purchasing these products online though, because some will claim to be much more effective than they actually are.
Included in the wide range of products are things like jewelry and amulets, but it’s best to avoid these products.
The most effective, if you’re looking to reduce your exposure to 5G radiation from your phone, are dedicated cases or diodes that can be stuck directly onto your mobile device. These are usually inexpensive and worth trying, but be careful because there currently isn’t a way to actually measure how effective they are.
If you’re really conscious of your exposure to 5G radiation then you can buy bigger EMF shields designed for devices such as computers and TVs, but these are often large metal cages that, while effective, aren’t the nicest things to look at.
You can even buy shielding fabrics (read my article) that can be sewn into clothes or hung over your bed, but these aren’t as effective as metal radiation cages. You can buy shielding fabric on Amazon, but it’s really quite expensive.
4. Keep living spaces EMF free
While EMF shields have been mentioned above, there are other measures that you can take to limit your 5G radiation exposure at home.
These are worth noting for the future because it’s unlikely that many devices in your home will currently be running on 5G frequencies, it’s only a matter of time before they’re used in a wide range of mobile and Wi-Fi enabled devices.
Consider the following tips:
- Unplug Wi-Fi enabled devices when not in use. This is particularly important around children and pregnant women, as radiation exposure can have negative impacts on their health and development. Read this article to know in detail.
- Keep your bedroom clear of phones and other devices that are running on 5G networks and frequencies. Not only will this help improve your sleep pattern, but it will also reduce your exposure in a room that you inevitably spend a large portion of your night using.
- Unplug your Wi-Fi when not in use. This is the simplest way to limit your exposure to its harmful EMF radiation, and this will become even more important when 5G takes over as the popular frequency.
- You can buy EMF protection paint that limits the amount of radiation that’s able to bleed through a wall. Much like the EMF fabric listed above though, this will be quite an expensive option, particularly if you plan to use it around the house.
The most important things to consider when protecting your home from 5G radiation are moderation and education. This is particularly relevant to children, as they are dependent on adults to tell them what’s right.
If you’re concerned about children using mobile devices too much at home then teach them about moderation, but more importantly, teach them why.
If children grow up educated about the dangers of 5G radiation then they will be able to make their own informed decisions about it.
5. Eat a healthy diet
This might seem like an unusual suggestion for combating exposure to 5G radiation, but your diet can make a big difference to the effects of radiation exposure.
Again, like many other suggestions on this list, this isn’t designed to remove the source of radiation. Instead, it’s about combating the effects of exposure.
The reason radiation is bad is that it increases the level of free radicals in your body, one of the main causes of cancer. Free radicals cause cells to become oxidated, which in turn can cause them to mutate, thus causing cancer.
Improving your knowledge and understanding of what free radicals are and how they affect your body will help you to limit their impact on your health.
The easiest way to combat free radicals and radiation-related DNA damage is to eat foods that have a high Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC).
The list of high ORAC foods is massive and definitely worth researching for yourself, but some of the major players in this category include asparagus, blueberries, walnuts, dates, pomegranate, rosemary, pecans, basil, cinnamon, and more.
Additionally, make sure you get good levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D3 (both commonly found in fish) to maximize your body’s ability to combat free radicals and reduce radiation damage.
6. Try earthing
Earthing, or grounding, is founded on the principle that humans should be in tune with the Earth’s magnetic frequency, and that doing so can have benefits to your health. It works on the same logic as ORAC foods in that it reduces oxidative stress on your body.
To earth yourself all you need to do is walk outside barefoot. Yes, it really is that simple.
Walking barefoot removes any electrical charge your body may be carrying, and equalizes you with the Earth’s electrical frequency. This makes it a good way to reduce radiation exposure and to limit the accumulation of free radicals in your body.
While there isn’t 100% conclusive evidence that this works, studies have been carried out into the efficacy of grounding in relation to EMF exposure. This study found that grounding did have positive effects on the participant’s general health, including the reduction of EMF absorption.
This method might not be the most suitable for dealing with 5G radiation, but walking around barefoot every now and then is hardly going to cause any harm. If possible, make an effort to walk around for 5-10 minutes every day, preferably outside, in order to earth yourself and reduce your risk of EMF radiation damage.
7. Build up knowledge on 5G
One of the best ways to avoid exposure to 5G radiation is to educate yourself on the most common sources, the extent of risks to your health, and the best measures to prevent this.
It will be useful to watch the news and research information on current studies and tests. The biggest issue with something like 5G radiation is that it takes a long time to study the effects on human health, all while people are being exposed to it every day.
As with many other things in life, it’s best to have as much knowledge as possible so you can make informed decisions about how to deal with 5G radiation.
Yes, we may not know the full extent of its dangers, but we have plenty of information on the risks of 4G radiation, and this can be used to extrapolate. Just make sure you stay informed on the current thinking and use this to shape the way you deal with 5G radiation.
5G Radiation Levels – Are They Safe?
When it comes to discussing EMF radiation (particularly 5G), safe is a difficult word to use.
There are known risks of radiation exposure, whatever its form, but the issue is how dangerous this radiation realistically is to the human body.
After all, millions (if not billions) of us use electronic devices on a daily basis, and it’s not very common to see the effects of radiation exposure.
It’s impossible to currently know the long-term effects of low-frequency radiation exposure, simply because we haven’t been using them for long enough.
However, many studies have found that the use of these low-level frequencies are linked to a variety of health issues, including:
- Disruption of cell metabolism
- Oxidative damage (free radicals)
- Melatonin reduction
- DNA damage
- Increased permeability of the blood/brain barrier
- Generation of stress proteins
Also, way back in 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) determined that radio frequency radiation as a possible cause of cancer. While this link wasn’t explicitly confirmed, it does raise questions about the use of 5G networks and how this will affect our health.
The biggest difference between 5G and its previous versions is that it uses much shorter wavelengths. This has a number of possible health issues, but the biggest concern is that it means there will be significantly more reception towers, which will lead to higher levels of 5G radiation than we’ve seen in the past.
A greater number of reception towers means one thing: greater exposure to radiation. The current thinking is that, in order to provide the levels of connectivity we expect from our mobile devices, we could possibly need reception towers or boosters on nearly every building.
Unlike 4G reception towers, which are already too common, there will need to be a 5G tower everywhere you look.
The short answer to the safety question is that we simply don’t know at this stage. It looks increasingly likely that the radiation levels won’t be classified as “safe,” but it’s possible to argue that current radiation levels aren’t safe either. The one thing we know for sure is that our exposure to 5G radiation is only going to be greater than with previous generations of mobile signals.
Concerns, Negative Effects, and Risks of 5G
The biggest concern with 5G radiation is the long term effects it might have on our health. As stated above, EMF radiation has been linked to a number of health issues and has been labeled as a potential carcinogen.
But again, it depends on the authority of the studies conducted, and the explicit link between EMF radiation and cancer, which hasn’t yet been established.
From a health perspective, the biggest concern is the increase in 5G waves compared to 4G or previous generations. It’s known that there will need to be more reception towers to compensate for the shorter wavelengths, but the main reason for this is that the shorter wavelengths have difficulty passing through objects such as walls, trees, and human skin.
This means there’s potentially less danger than with 4G radiation, simply because there’s less possibility of it entering our bodies.
The risk to our health stems from the increased and prolonged exposure to this new frequency, which will increase in use exponentially with the installation of 5G reception towers. This means there will be less opportunity to avoid 5G radiation while going about our daily lives, and so the risk of adverse effects on our health will be increased.
In response to these main concerns about EMF radiation, many countries have brought in laws to limit exposure to radio waves.
For example, France introduced a law that stopped nurseries from installing Wi-Fi to limit young children’s exposure to harmful EMF radiation. Similarly, a study in Namibia banned the advertising of mobile devices to children in an effort to reduce their exposure.
The bottom line regarding concerns and negative effects of 5G radiation is that more research needs to be conducted into the health risks it poses.
The leading studies used worldwide (such as the one by the WHO) state that EMF radiation might be linked to cancer, but a more explicit link needs to be established in order to work out the next steps.
5G Radiation Studies
Studies into 5G radiation aren’t as in-depth as with previous generations of mobile signals, mainly because the technology is still quite new.
The findings of the studies also need to be taken lightly for now, mainly because there might be considerable bias behind them. For example, The Nation found a link between the telecoms industry and an attempt to downplay the dangers of 5G radiation.
As mentioned previously, one of the most important pieces of research in this field is the study conducted by the World Health Organization back in 2011. It classed mobile devices as a Class 2B carcinogen, which means a possible link, but this is a category also shared by aloe vera and pickles and so ultimately needs to be taken with some skepticism.
One of the most important areas of research that needs to be investigated further is the impact of 5G radiation on children.
We are becoming dependent on mobile devices very early in our lives, and so the risk this poses is of great importance. Mobi-kids is currently developing a study in 13 countries to examine this in more detail.
The National Toxicology Program has recently released information on a range of studies conducted into the dangers of mobile signals.
The most important thing to take away from these studies is that they used 2G and 3G networks (which shows how far behind technology these studies have to work) and that conclusions about links were very difficult to draw out.
To highlight the lack of research into 5G radiation it’s important to look at the most current concerns. In April 2018 the International Society of Doctors for the Environment called for a halt on the rollout of 5G technology in order for more research to be conducted.
They state that their judgment is a precautionary measure, which again doesn’t explicitly link 5G radiation to negative health effects, but argues that more time is needed for research.
The main thing to take away from these studies is that we just don’t conclusively know the link between 5G radiation and the risks it might pose to our health and that more research should be done before its introduced.
However, this is unlikely to happen because the technology is already being rolled out in a number of countries, and these kinds of studies take several years to complete.
As users of these new technologies, we should do everything possible to reduce our exposure to the potentially harmful 5G radiation.
We should educate ourselves on the most current research, and be aware if these findings change. But most importantly, we should always look into the background of these studies because many will be backed by companies that have something to gain from the results.
5G Radiation vs 4G Radiation
The main difference between 4G and 5G is that the former uses lower frequency waves, and so reception towers can be set up miles apart and still work fine.
5G reception towers however need to be much closer together because the network uses much shorter and higher frequency wavelengths. This means we could even see mini cell receptors being attached to almost every home in order to get better coverage.
So what does this really mean? It essentially boils down to the fact that every electronic device gives off electromagnetic radiation, and while this is something we come into contact with on a daily basis already.
The true impact of 5G radiation hasn’t been tested fully, and the increased number of reception towers needed for the network will greatly increase exposure.
The very fact that 5G networks are being introduced as a replacement to 4G means there are differences between the two networks, but what are the main differences?
They use different frequencies
4G networks run on frequencies below 6GHz, whereas 5G networks use frequencies between 30GHz and 300GHz. This means 5G networks operate on higher frequencies using shorter-range radio waves. Ultimately, they can’t travel as far but are more efficient at what we need them to do.
5G frequencies also have greater directional accuracy than 4G. 4G reception towers currently work by shooting radio waves (and radiation) in different directions, which isn’t the most energy-efficient method of delivering data to customers.
5G towers however can be used to provide accurate data beams in a greater concentration than 4G, and can potentially supply super-fast bandwidth to more than 1000 devices per square meter than 4G.
5G is much faster
Using higher frequency radio waves means greater bandwidth speeds. This translates to internet speeds over 20 times faster than 4G and means your phone could load a webpage in under a millisecond.
However, these high-frequency waves mean there’s more potential for interference from weather, buildings, and other sources, which is why there need to be more reception towers. More reception towers mean more radiation exposure.
Final Thoughts on 5g Radiation Dangers And Protection
5G radiation is still a relatively new concept in the world of radio frequencies, and its effect on our health isn’t properly studied.
Although conclusive links between EMF radiation exposure and cancer haven’t been explicitly established, there’s enough research around to show that it’s something we should be concerned about.
So working on current information, what should we do about 5G radiation?
Ultimately, we should educate ourselves as much as possible and take proactive steps to limit our exposure to radiation wherever possible.
Changing your routine now before the rollout of 5G networks will mean you’re in good habits when it is released. And it won’t do any harm to be cautious about your exposure to radiation.
